Penn State football rivalries
Penn State has a number of rivals, including the Michigan Wolverines, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Michigan State Spartans, the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Syracuse Orange and the Temple Owls.
Penn State also plays for two Rivalry Trophies. They play for the Governor’s Victory Bell againts Minnesota. The Penn State Nittany Lions are 6-4 in games for the Governors Victory Bell. Penn State has had the trophy since the 2006 season, due to the fact that the teams haven’t played each other the past 2 years.
Penn State tickets are also in big demand for the Land Grant Trophy game, played againts Michigan State. The Lions are 12-4 in that game, and won the 2008 rendition of the game.
Penn State football also has an officialy recognized rivalry with Ohio State. The series is currently tied at 12-12. One particularly memorable game came in 2001, when Penn State football came from behind to give Joe Patterno his 324th win, and letting him pass Bear Bryant for the winningest coach in college football. Penn State Ohio State tickets are always in high demand, and the games are usually very close. In 24 meetings, 9 of the games have been seven points or closer.

Penn State football has been invited to 4 Bowl Games. They are 26-12-2 (.675), giving them the highest winning percentage of any Division 1 FBS team. Even more impresively, they are 14-5-1 in the “Major Bowls.” Penn State’s Joe Paterno is the only college football coach to have won all five mayor bowls. He also leads the way in bowl appearences (35) and wins (23). The 2008 Rose Bowl will be Pappa Joe’s 35th Bowl Game. Most recently Penn State football won the Alamo Bowl in 2007. Prior to the 2009 Rose Bowl, Penn State has been to two Rose Bowls, winning one and loosing one.
